Yet another successful family reunification was conducted with the assistance of IOM.
Last Tuesday morning Mahmoud, an Ethiopian father of three, was anxiously awaiting the arrival of his family at Budapest Airport: this was going to be the first time in almost three years he could see his wife, Amira and their daughters again.
Mahmoud has been living in Hungary for 1,5 years now and received international protection. He has a secure job to provide for the family and also a home, with the support of BMSZKI, where they can all comfortably stay together. They applied for family reunification last December, when Amira and the three kids had to travel all the way to Kenya’s capital Nairobi to the closest Hungarian Embassy and submit their application there.
It took 8 months to undertake all necessary procedures, but eventually their claim was approved by the Hungarian Authorities and Mahmoud’s family started to prepare for the big journey. For the youngest girl, Aliya (aged 3), it was even more special: this was the first time she actually met her father who left when she was just a few months old. Eventually the flight has landed and the girls could even have their first taste of their new home: Milka chocolate as a present from their father!
The travel from Ethiopia to Hungary took place within the framework of IOM Budapest's family reunification project, which is co-financed by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund of the European Union and by the Hungarian Ministry of Interior. IOM organized the family's flight bookings, tickets, and "fit-to-travel" medical exams and also provided assistance at the airports while transiting and at arrival in Budapest. BMSZKI supported the family within the framework of their Refugee Housing Programme (MMIA-2.2.8.-2015-00002).
